There is so much talk about independent/swing voters being an easily definable group of folks. You often hear the pundit class say "who will capture swing voters this election"? As if this is really a bloc of people that have a consistent way of looking at the world. This post by Digby is spot on, swing voters are essentially part of faceless irrational mob who are more apt to respond to media primes then consistent policy messages. It is the job of those engaged in politics to 'spread the love'.
