Sanctimonious BS

By all mainstream media accounts, John Kerry is the worst person to ever live. Why? Because he 'botched a joke' about George W. Bush. His comments were intended to point out that Bush's horrible actions have led to the needless deaths of thousands. Instead the right wing machine and their gimp's in the regular media jumped all over the fact that it seemed like he was insulting the troops.

Yet when the President unapologetically joked about sending thousands of young men and women to needlessly die? That's comic gold:

These people are sick S.O.B's and need to be thrown out of office.

Frenchie, you know I'm left-leaning, but c'mon, you really believe that Kerry's comment was directed at Bush's handling of Iraq?

If you look at the entire context of the joke (not just the soundbite you hear or read about), there is very little doubt that the focus was on George Bush. However, when I first heard the clip, I definitely would have agreed with you.

Dirty, you actually believe that Kerry is stupid enough to say that, essentially if you are not smart you will be in the military? How do you find that plausible?

I'll admit, I've only heard the brief clip. I'll see if I can dig it up online as I'm interested in hearing more of it.

Disco, that is the part that really pissed me off.

You think the press would have asked, "why is a vet insulting other vets?." Nothing about the press reaction makes sense. Then again, nothing they seem to do makes sense.

It struck me as being odd too, Frenchie. But it's hard to imagine he meant anything other than what he said when you hear the clip by itself. I'm trying to find a transcript or full version of Kerry's speech, but I'm not having any luck. Got a link?

So the more I read about it, the more I realize it was in fact a botched joke about W.

Man, was that a botched joke...It certainly created quite a shitstorm.

Yeah, Kerry f'ed up big time.

Nothing against you Dirty, but it's interesting that even "lefties" are buying into the White House talking points, at least initially.

You know, this video is great, but it would be a lot more convincing for the 'regime change on Tuesday' argument if Nancy Pelosi wasn't laughing at the same WMD jokes!

Disco,

You are absolutely right about the fact that Pelosi is featured. I thought the same thing. That having been said, I would be able to sleep at night knowing that Pelosi is in charge.

About the White House talking points, I don't think that people bought into the talking points. Instead, they were sold on the mainstream conventional wisdom offered by CNN and the New York Times. The WH wants to get their line out there and they are free to do so. It is the press which offers little to know analysis/context that is the problem.

One of the reasons why I bought it initially was because some of his fellow Dems (Hillary, etc.) were so quick to condemn him. Had it only been Fox News blowhards, it would've raised suspicion.

Yeah Dirty, no shit. What was up with that? I really like Kerry's 'go f yourself' initial response to the BS outrage. Nice muscular response. 1/ where was that in '04? 2/ where was that in Hillary?

How 'bout McCain's response too? I used to respect that guy, but he's increasingly becoming a pandering bush lapdog like all the rest.

No kidding, eh? Kerry's finally showing some testicular fortitude, albeit a little too late. Too bad he didn't respond to the Swift Boat attacks as quickly and strongly.
